Cool Safety
The Peoria Fire Dept. will be at the park on May 26th
from 11:45a to 1pm. They
will discuss water safety and hose the kids down. Thanks to Jolene for setting-up
this much requested activity.
Curriculum Sale at the Park
May 26th
Bring your old curriculum to the park and pass it on
for someone else to use. No
vendors from outside our group please. Table space is at a premium, so it's
best to
bring your own.
WEST SIDE HOME EDUCATORS SUMMER BOWLING LEAGUE
Stay cool and have fun bowling this summer. Join our
West Side Home Educators
Summer Bowling League. Teams are forming now. Parents can bowl as well as
the
children. Teams may be all children, all adults or mixed.
We will bowl for eight weeks every Wednesday for 1p.m.
to 3 p.m. We'd like to
start June 9th so we'll finish the last week in July. This leaves August
for all you "Zonies"
who head for California to beat the heat.
The cost per bowler is $3.24 per week. This includes
two games and your shoes.
An added benefit--as a league member you'll be entitled to a 50% discount
for games
bowled during regular open bowling time, plus free shoes. This is a great
deal and will
be lots of fun.

Congratulations to Charles Wood
Charles Wood, a student in our group, was awarded honorable
mention for two
poems he submitted to a poetry contest. His poems will be published in the
summer
issue of WORDPRINTS, a literary magazine put out by the Glendale Pubic Library
Youth Department. Congratulations Charles!

Just a reminder to participants: Please bring your projects at 11:00 sharp
for judging.
Please leave projects at the fair until 4:30 if possible, so everyone will
have a chance
to view them. Don't forget your camera for the many expected photo ops. We
will
not have food in the hall, plan to stop for a snack or bring something to
grab between
activities.

we know it

Exciting Things for next year
The 1999/2000 school year is looking good. There's talk in the group that
Glenda
Lovera will coordinate a Spanish Club, and Linda Powell is heading up a
toddler-
preschool play time.
A Midsummer Night's Dream
A production of the Shine Players with a cast of 30. This production is a
slightly
shortened version of the full Shakespearean play, however the language is
original
and has not been modernized. The Shine Players are a mostly homeschooled
group
and have been together for 3 years. There will also be jugglers, some music
and
other renaissance entertainment.
Cost is $4. Call Charissa at xxx-xxxx for information and tickets.
There will be 7 performances at 2 locations.

Next Year's God's World Weekly Reader Subscriptions
This is a weekly Christian newspaper for grades k-9. We're not sure of the
exact price, but it will be approximately $7 per student per year. Contact
Suzan Grove at the park or at xxx-xxxx. Please pay by check. No cash
please. Many thanks to Suzan for taking over this activity.
Actions Speak Louder Than Words
On March 18, 1999, students from our WSHE performed a play directed by
and performed by "kids." Brigette Grimes organized and directed this first
ever
WSHE all-kids play. The play was called "Actions Speak Louder Than Words"
and was from the American Girls' collection. For two and one-half months,
with
her actors and crew, organized auditions, ran rehearsals, and made sets.
These
are the students who participated and performed the play: Chris Yates, Angela
Metcalf, Michelle Kesler, Alex Yates, Jamie Haas, Heidi Hiller, Megan Grimes,
Jessica Carpenter, Erin Grimes, Justine Kendall, Cara Moreth, and J.P. Grimes.
They all did an excellent job!!!
Planning Meeting in April
The location for the April 27th planning meeting is Chris and Pearl Mahar's
house,

directions. The meeting is at 7pm. We will nominate board members for next
year.

May Planning Meeting For All Members
The May planning meeting for all members is Monday, May 17th at 5-9pm in
the
auditorium at Glendale Public Library. At the May meeting we will elect board
members for next year. Please attend if you plan on being in the group next
year.
Skating All Summer
Beat the heat and roller skate with your pals this summer! North Phoenix
Baptist
Church is letting us use their skating rink every month this summer! The
Church is
located at Bethany and Central. Cost is $3 per skater and rollerblades are
not

Speechmasters
Help! We will need someone to take over Speechmaster next year. Bev Wolf
has
been doing a great job (Thanks Bev) but she is leaving us next year. We will
need
someone to start in December, but it's best to start the transition in September.

Teen Literature Discussion Group!

What Book? H. G. Wells classic Science Fiction novel, War of the Worlds to

End of the Year Pool Party
Leslie Landauer has agreed to organize our end of the year pool party. The
date is
June 5th, but is still tentative. Cost is $2 per head. This includes everyone
who
comes through the gate, as we have to hire lifeguards per the number of people
who attend, even if you don't swim. Sign up and pay in advance at the park.
You
can verify the date on the sign up sheet at the park.

Helping Equip with Activities, Resources & Teamwork
Monthly Meetings for:
-New or prospective Home educators
-Anyone looking for new ideas, resources, answers for a new
phase of home education.
Each session will include:
* New homeschoolers' information
* Updated listings of classes, activities, resources, opportunities for home
schoolers
* Special focus on teen resources, lots of free or low cost resource materials
Plus a special topic and speakers each month reflecting the interests and
needs of
home educators (support groups, teen events, extracurricular activities,
college
prep, special needs children, testing and evaluation etc.)
All meetings are scheduled for 6:30-8:30pm at Glendale Library Auditorium,

W. Brown Ave., Glendale--2 blocks south of Peoria.
The next meeting is on Monday, May 3rd. The topic is Teen groups and activities.
The following meeting is June 7th. The topic is Volunteer and Community Services
Opportunities.
Bring you junior high and high school students. Childcare is not provided.

AFHE Convention
The largest homeschooling convention and curriculum sale in Arizona will
be held
at the North lobby of the Civic Plaza on July 16th & 17th. See their

Arizona State Spelling Bee
Thank you all who prayed for Jon and expressed well wishes. If was a great
experience
for us. Of the 26 finalists, fourteen were eighth grade, six were seventh
grade, three
were sixth grade and three were fifth grade. Three of these were home schooled.
Desiree
Morris, fifth grade Region 2 winner from Road Runners finished in third place,
Deanna
Clem, eighth grade Pima County winner and John Bailey, fifth grade Region
4 winner
finished seventeenth.
All finalists received medallion. The top five finishers received a trophy
and a prize.
The Bee was videotaped and will be aired April 24th at 6:30 p.m. on channel
15.
As you may imagine, the competition was fierce, but John is not discouraged.
He has
set his sights for next year.
The Salt Seller has a new hotline at 249-SALT.
Ham Radio License Class
Over the summer Chris Mahar will be teaching a co-op class for students who
want
to pass the No-Code Tech Ham Radio exam and obtain their license. The class
size
is limited to 5 people, but if there is more interest he may do the class
again. Interested
students must be able to do some basic algebra. Cost will be about $30 to
purchase
the book, 'Now You're Talking' and test fees. Contact Chris at cmahar@apsc.com

Many thanks to Penny Hiller for serving as the West Side Home Educator
Director the past several years. Penny has guided the group and kept us
together through a time of incredible growth in the homeschooling
movement. She will still be with us as a board member next year, but is
stepping down as leader of our group. Thanks Penny.
