Lava River Cave Field Trip
When: November 12
Where: Lava River Cave, Flagstaff
What Time: Meet at Home Depot, I17 and Thunderbird, at 7:30 am
Cost: Free
Contact: Dee Plueard 623-xxx-xxxx
Lava River Cave is a 3/4-mile underground cave left by lava flows. Anyone
interested in this field trip will need to prepare for it. The temperature
inside
ranges from 30 to 40 degrees, the floor surface is unpredictable and the
interior is pitch black. I've been there, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience,
but it is definitely not your usual sightseeing trip. Here's a list of what
you will
need to bring: a hat (even a baseball cap will help prevent scraping your
head),
winter coat or several layers of clothing, sturdy shoes, and at least one
flashlight per person with extra batteries. I would recommend two flashlights
per person with extra batteries, if you can manage it. Do not plan on sharing
flashlights. Pack your lunch and sense of adventure!
Thanksgiving Potluck
Gobble.... Gobble......
The Thanksgiving celebration will be held this year on Wednesday, November
17th at Sweetwater park. Activities include crafts, games, dress up (optional),
opening prayer, and Student Council fundraiser . There will be plenty of
opportunity available for all of you culinary experts to tantalize us with
your
main dishes, salads and desserts. Or, how about bringing the picnic supplies.
If your specialty is baking, we need cakes for the cake walk as well. Have
a
favorite game or craft that you would like to share? Additional help is needed
for clean up, monitoring games, extra tables etc. It looks like a lot of
hard work
and you're bound to work up a thirst. But don't fear the Student Council
will be
selling canned soda for 25 cents. (No cost for games, crafts, or food). In
order
to keep track of who is doing what, sign up sheets will be available at the
park starting Wednesday, October 20th.
For more info. contact Jean Lynch coordinator at 623-xxx-xxxx

An Opportunity to Serve
A kind smile, a simple escort, delivering a flower or just a friendly "hello",
are
just a few ways you can make a difference in someone's life. Explore the
fascinating opportunity of becoming a junior volunteer at Boswell Hospital.
It will be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for your life. There is a
variety of positions available in the admitting office, pathology, medical
imaging, pharmacy, cafeteria, gift shop, surgical central, coffee cart
service, nursing care, mail and flower delivery, even driving the shuttles
if you are licensed. Your commitment in hours could be as little as 4 a
week, a few times each month. The blessings you'll receive from your
volunteered time are immeasurable. If you are a college bond student,
you will benefit by acquiring community service hours for your enrollment
application. This is a fine program efficiently run and Boswell welcomes
and appreciates the junior volunteers. If this is something you might be
interested in even for a short time, I encourage you to enroll. We are
targeting January as the month to begin, so call immediately to plan your
hours in your schedule. You must be age 13 by the start of the program.
The sooner you enroll the better the selection you have to serve in.
Parents are welcome to join the volunteer staff and work the same hours
as their child. For more information on duties you might perform, or
areas of availability to serve call: Leslie Landauer @ (623) xxx-xxxx.
Reading Club
Would you be interested in a reading club for your elementary age student?
Are you looking for a fun way to both motivate your child to read, to have
a fun way to share what he has read with others and to just have a fun
time? I am looking for others who might have an interest in this and who
would like to meet once a month, with our kids, so they may share through
a variety of fun projects, what they have read. If this is you, please call
Patrice Blank at (623) xxx-xxxx or e-mail me at JustMe518@aol.com

New Website Made By Two Of Our Homeschoolers!
Jeremiah and Simon But have recently finished a website about
the care and keeping of snakes. Visit it at: http://simonsnakesite.tripod.com/
.
Even if you don't own a pet snake, visit it anyway, we guarantee you
will learn a lot! It's got tons of information and even a quiz about snakes.
People interested in putting up a website of their own might want to see
this too.
Speechmasters
This great program has been around our area for about 3 years and is
about homeschoolers getting together to teach and encourage
our children in the art of public speaking.
Children can bring someone's else writing to read or can write their own
to come and present it in front of the group. The group will vote for the
best speaker in each category, and whoever wins is awarded a trophy.
+ There will be three different age groups: 4-7, 8-10, 11 and up.
+ Each session will have a different theme; some already set are: Vacation
Story,
Biography, Autobiography, What if..., Original Poem, Book Report,
and Humorous Writing.
+ We will meet every other Thursday in the afternoon.
+ The cost is $1 per family per session.
If you are interested, pick up a speechmaster registration form at Park
Day, or e-mail me at dovebut@hotmail.com and I will e-mail you a
registration form. Come and see them improve on writing, expression,
vocalization, creativity, and speaking in front of others!!

Greetings From Oregon And The Northwest
The Smith-Gillespie family appreciated the kind words of gratitude and
the lovely gifts that were given to us at the "End of the Year" pool party.
We hope everyone has a great year. If anybody is headed up our way,
we'd certainly enjoy showing them a little about the Northwest region.
God bless.
The Smith-Gillespie Family
Park Patrol Volunteers Needed
We need people to volunteer to check the park at the end of Park
Day to make sure we leave it in good condition. This simply means
staying until 2:00 p.m. when normal park day ends and at that time
checking the condition of the rest rooms and patroling the pavillions
to pick up trash that may have been left inadvertantly. You may also
find items that need to go to "lost and found". If each mom volunteers
to do this once, we should be covered for the rest of the school
year. There will be a sign up sheet at the park.
Thanks for your help. We want to keep our good reputation and
be good stewards of the park.
Things Coming Up
The spelling Bee is coming up on January 10th. In January we will
have a field trip to attend a live performance of Macbeth. We also
have our Talent Show toward the end of January.
In February we have the toothpick bridge contest and the Jason Project.
