W.S.H.E. ASTRONOMY CLUB
The first Astronomy Club night was a big success. Thirteen families
gathered at the Kesler's home to view an informative slide presentation
"An Introduction to the Night Sky", by Tony and Carole La Conte. Did
you know that when you look out at the moon in its first quarter, that
you are looking at the place in space that the earth will occupy in 3
1/2 hours? And when you view the moon in its last quarter phase, you
are looking at the spot that the earth traveled through 3 1/2 hours
previously? Did you know that when you view the Northern Lights, it
is gaseous matter flung away from the Sun by a solar flare that you are
viewing? Well, if you didn't and you would like to learn more of these
fascinating facts, come to the next W.S.H.E. Astronomy night. On October
18th, at 7:00 p.m., we will study the moon, its history and legends, view
the moon through telescopes and binoculars, measure the size of lunar craters
and the distance to the moon. Bring lawn chairs and or blankets for the slide
presentation, which will take place outside in the back yard. If you have your
own telescope or binoculars you are welcome to bring them and Mr. La
Conte will assist in learning how to use them better. The cost is $5.00 per
family per month. You can pick up the schedule for the rest of the year
that night. Feel free to come whenever you can make it. You do not have
to commit to coming every time. Any questions call Bonnie Bailey at
