"The Magical Magpie"

Cost: $3.50 per person (adult or child) MUST BE PAID IN ADVANCE. Your
space is NOT confirmed unless your paid in full by the deadline on

"Magical Magpie" based on a short story by Susana de la Pena. Seen as a
messenger in many cultures, the blackbird in this exciting new work serves
as our guide on a magical journey. Bring your imagination! Join us for this
charming play. Sign up at the park or call Denise to reserve your spot. We

MOM'S NIGHT OUT
"Let's Talk Books!"
When: Friday, January 15th
Time: 7:30pm
Where: Barnes and Noble Book Store
75th Ave. and Bell
Cost: Dessert and beverage

"LET'S TALK BOOKS"...If you love books (or want to learn HOW to love them)
then you need to join us for some "book talk" over dessert and coffee at
Barnes and Noble. We'll talk about ANY kind of subject you desire... books
from homeschooling (curriculum-what's good or bad), to cooking, to self
help, to recreational reading like mysteries, science fiction, romance,
thrillers...the choices are endless and what better place to do it in but a
bookstore! This will be loads of fun, so come and be a part of it. Sign up
will be at the park or call Denise.

WSHE REGISTRATION UPDATE
W.S.H.E. has a new person in charge of registration. Lori Krem is now
handling all registration for our support group. She will also handle
updates for future directories. Updated forms should be at the kiosk, but
in case someone gets an old form please let them know to make all checks
payable to West Side Home Educators and mail forms and funds to Lori Krem
at: 4624 West El Caminito Drive Glendale, AZ 85302. Any questions, call
Lori at her new #937-0734.

4-H UPDATE
Wonderful things are happening with the Critter Club. I have the opportunity
to go to a training for leaders of small animal clubs. It is recommended
that we hold off on the meeting until I take the training which should be
sometime in January. This is something new that they are offering The
benefits from this training will be worth the wait so please hang in there.
I am also looking for someone to be a co-leader for the Critter Club. Anyone
interested please call me at my new # 937-0734.

For those of you who have been leaving messages for me and wondering why I
have not returned your call, my new telephone # is incorrect in the new
directory. The correct # is 937-0734. Please correct this in your directory!

STUDENT COUNCIL SPONSORED BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT:
Be watching for more information on the 3 on 3 Basketball tournament to be
held on Wednesdays in February. This student council sponsored event will
be open to all members of WSHE ages 8 and up. Teams will be formed by age,
8-9 year olds, 10-11, 12-13, 14 & up, and consist of 3 or 4 players (1 sub.
allowed).

POETRY CONTEST- GRADES K-12
Remember to submit your original poems to Barbara Smith-Gillespie by
Wednesday, Feb. 10. Two typed copies are required for judging.

TALENT SHOW, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 27, 1999:
Come show us your talents and/or support your friends on stage! Sign ups
continue at the park in January. Participants must be at the Glendale
Library, 59th Ave. and Brown, by 9:20a.m. The show should begin promptly at
9:30a.m. Please contact Chairperson Heather Harris at 873-6874 with any
questions.

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS
My name is Bridgette Grimes and I would like to direct a play for kids.
It's called "Actions Speak Louder than Words". It is about Samantha, and
American Girl, and her family in 1904. We need 24 kids to participate in
acting, props, set construction, and costumes. Sign up and practice will be
on Wednesday park days. We will perform the play at the Glendale Public
Library Auditorium on March 18th. If you are interested, please sign up on
Jan. 6th or Jan. 13th at the park.

AIT P.E. News
P.E. continues with the west side home educators. We have broken it's all
time world record for the number of kids in the homeschool P.E. program. We
hit close to 180! WOW!
The next sports will be a rotation of basketball/volleyball and field
hockey. The Presidential Physical Fitness Test is coming in March or April.
We will be working on our fitness level in preparation for the fitness test.

SPEECHMASTERS
Homeschoolers meeting together to teach and encourage our children in the
art of public speaking. We meet every other Thursday at 11am at Palmcroft
Church, 15825 N. 35th Ave. (between Greenway and Bell) in room #E401.
Children ages 4+ can participate. Children are grouped for voting purposes:
ages 4-7, 8-10, 11+
January 14 - Introductions and the Art of Conversation
January 28th - Commercial

PLANNING MEETING
Our next planning meeting is Tuesday, January 26th at 7pm at the First
Baptist Church, 8133 W. Cactus Road. The planning meetings are open to all
members, so if you would like to plan a field trip or activity, please
attend.


HOME EDUCATORS H.E.A.R.T.
Helping Equip with Activities, Resources & Teamwork

Monthly Meetings for:
New or prospective Home educators
Anyone looking for new ideas, resources, answers for a new phase of home
education.

Each session will include:
* New homeschoolers' information
* Updated listings of classes, activities, resources, opportunities
for home schoolers
* Special focus on teen resources, lots of free or low cost resource
materials
Plus a special topic and speakers each month reflecting the interests and
needs of home educators (support groups, teen events, extracurricular
activities, college prep, special needs children, testing and evaluation
etc.)

All meetings are scheduled for 6:30-8:30pm at Glendale Library Auditorium,
5959 W. Brown Ave., Glendale--2 blocks south of Peoria.

The next meeting is on Monday,
January 11th.

Bring you junior high and high school students. Childcare is not provided.
If you must bring your young children, please bring a quiet activity for
them. Audiotapes of past meetings are available. RSVP to Holly at 942-7296

AFHE sponsored event
STATE HOME SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE.

This exciting day long conference is open to home school leaders. It
includes practical workshops on strengthening support group involvement and
leadership skills and legislative strategies. It addition there is a set
down lunch with speakers from the Legislature. This is a great opportunity
to meet home school leaders from around the state.
